Brookings will receive a $1.7 million Economic Development Administration grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which will go toward water and sewer infrastructure upgrades at the Brookings airport.

The grant comes in the wake of damage caused by the 2011 tsunami. The upgrades will help prepare the airport to handle a larger volume of people following future natural disasters. An adjacent 20-acre site will also receive updates with the grant funds.

The Commerce Department will award $8 million total nationwide, including communities in Alaska, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Texas and Vermont.
