A man in his early 20s kicked in the door of a home and rushed past two men to stab a 24-year-old man he'd been chasing multiple times Wednesday night, police reported.

Medford police believe the stabbing is gang-related, but said the victim is not affiliated with a gang and wasn't wearing clothes that could be mistaken for gang clothing. Investigators don't think the man who was stabbed and his assailant knew each other.

The incident began around 10 p.m. when the 24-year-old waved down a police officer near the corner of Withington and Plum streets. He told police a Latino man in his early 20s rode up to him on a BMX bike and asked what gang he was in. The victim said he was not in a gang, but the other man pulled out a knife, threatened him, and rode off.

After reporting the incident to the passing officer, the man kept walking toward his home. Police started looking for a suspect. The officer heard a disturbance in the 500 block of Plum Street a few minutes later and went to investigate. He arrived to find the 24-year-old, who said he'd just been stabbed.

He reported to police that the bicyclist had ridden up to him a second time on Plum Street. The man tried to run, and the suspect pursued him on his bike. He decided he was too far from home, so he ran into a stranger's home in the 500 block of Plum Street home. He asked two men there for help, saying someone was after him.

The man with the knife arrived at the home, kicking in the door despite the residents' attempt to shut the door and keep the attacker out. He forced his way in, ran past the two men who live there and stabbed the 24-year-old in the home's living room.

The two men living there pulled the suspect off, and he fled. The 24-year-old who had been stabbed also ran, fleeing to a home on Benson Street where police were called.

He was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, police said. He remains at the hospital, but no update on his condition was immediately available this morning, officials said.

The case remains under investigation.

Medford police are on the hunt for the suspect, who they described as between 20 and 24 years old, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches, wearing dark clothing and a blue bandana on his head.
