  • The Josephine County Sheriff's Office is warning residents near the wildfire zone to avoid becoming victims of a scam involving false evacuation notices.
Sheriff's officials said residents have reported seeing suspects go door-to-door ordering people to evacuate their homes in various areas in Josephine County.
However, these places have not been ordered to evacuate by law enforcement, officials said.
Officials speculated the suspects could be hoping the residents leave their homes so they can break in and steal valuables inside.
If evacuations are ordered, a law enforcement officer or firefighter in an official public safety vehicle will deliver the message to residents.
Official information also will be disseminated through the media.
If people other than public safety officials come to your home, ask them for identification, gather and document as much information about them and their vehicle as possible, and turn that information over to police, the Sheriff's Office said.
