Joyce Mae Cogdell of Medford, Ore., passed away October 3, 2013 with her son.and daughter-in-law at her side. She was born in New Orleans, La., August 4, 1931 to Gilbert A. and Thelma (Adams) Guidroz. On May 18, 1948 she married Lawrence A. Cogdell, Sr. who preceded her in death. They moved to Metairie, La. where she lived until she was evacuated after Hurricane Katrina and then moved near her son, Lawrence A. Cogdell, Jr. (Laura) also of Medford.
Joyce enjoyed gardening, dancing, bingo, playing cards and fishing. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of New Orleans, La. An avid New Orleans Saints fan, she was quite competitive and never intimidated despite her small stature. Joyce was a big hit at her assisted living residences where she told friends and strangers alike stories of her beloved Louisiana and, of course, Hurricane Katrina. A spitfire who handled life changes in stride with a delightful, matter-of-fact sense of humor, Joyce was always generous but frugal and practical.
"I love you all, don't cry, just remember Dad and I had a good life together, and this world is just temporary. We'll meet again. Love, Mom," she wrote in her final instructions.
A special thank you to all of Joyce's caregivers, most recently Farmington Square of Medford, who gave to and received much love from her. Also our heartfelt appreciation to the knowledgeable, sensitive professionals at Providence Hospice, Medford.
Joyce is survived by her son; two daughters, Bonnie Laurent and Kathy Tully (Tommy) of Lafayette, Ind.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Arrangements are being made by Perl Funeral Home, Medford. Joyce will be remembered at the weekend Masses at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 517 W 10th St, Medford. A private memorial celebration is planned at her son's home. In lieu of flowers, contributions to assist disabled veterans may be made in Joyce's memory to VA SORCC, 8495 Crater Lake Hwy, White City, OR 97503.
