Michael Dudley Hassen, 48, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on October 17, 2013 after a heroic 13 year battle with scleroderma. Born in Salem to John and Ethel Hassen, he was raised in Medford, Ore. and made his home in Portland, Ore.

A standout swimmer, Mike competed from the age of nine through his college years. He graduated from Boston University in political science, followed by a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Portland. He taught in the Beaverton School District.

He married Nancy Proutt in 1992. Their son, Alex, is now a sophomore at Harvard. Alex was his greatest joy. Michael loved spending time at the beach with loved ones, his weekly card game with best buddies, animated political discourse (especially with his father), and his dogs.

In addition to his devoted parents, wife and son, survivors include brother, Bob (Sonia) of San Anselmo, Calif.; sister, Julie (Mark) Wiesner of Vancouver, Wash.; sister, Megan Hassen (Courtland Geyer) of Salem, Ore.; beloved niece and nephews, Ellie, Evan, Luke, Max, John, and Ben; and his loving and supportive extended family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kids Unlimited, 821 N. Riverside, Medford, OR 97501, or in his honor, you can enjoy many years of happiness by adopting a shelter dog!

Many thanks to the medical staff at Kaiser and those in the Kaiser Hospice Program who helped Michael in his journey. He was also gifted a double lung transplant by a generous, anonymous family in 2008 at UCSF, which allowed him to fulfill his wish to see his son graduate from high school and begin his own journey at Harvard.

A celebration of his life will be held at his favorite beach at a later date.
