The Environmental Protection Agency has named Medford a Green Power Community because of the city's increase in renewable energy use.

The Medford City Council announced the news at Thursday's meeting. The city set a goal of boosting the number of homes and businesses supporting Blue Sky renewable energy by 25 percent between April and December 2013.

With one month remaining, the community has already increased participation by 30 percent, Pacific Power said in a news release announcing the award.

Pacific Power officials reported Medford is one of 50 communities in the U.S. with the distinction. In Oregon, 12 communities meet the requirements for recognition.
