1933 ~ 2014
Mary Irene Kruggel-Bates, aged 80 years, of Medford, Ore. passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014.
She was born to the late Frank and Katherine Silva, August 3, 1933, in Medford, Ore. Irene attended Medford High School.
Irene was a cook and baker in the Medford School District for several years. She retired as the head cafeteria baker from Harry and David where she was especially known for her cinnamon rolls, which the employees raced for on their morning breaks.
She married Robert Kruggel of Medford, Ore. May 6, 1951 and had two children from that union; Deborah Hallin of Redmond, Ore. and Dale Kruggel of Medford, Ore.
Irene married John Bates in Reno, Nev. July 6, 2004. She and John enjoyed spending their winters as snowbirds in Arizona with their dog, Misty.
She loved gardening, bird watching, and reading. She was an avid baker in her spare time too. Members of her family particularly remember her hot rolls, giant cookies, and light, flakey pie crusts.
When her children were young, Irene participated in T.O.P.S. (Take Pounds Off Sensibly). They recall she was the participant who lost the most weight during that year and was elected the program president.
Irene is survived by her husband, John; siblings, Betty, Barbara, Sue, and Bill; her children, Deborah and Dale; and daughter-in- law Becky. She is also survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her family and friends are honored to have known her. She will be dearly missed.
