CRESWELL — North Medford freshman Kiana Oshiro showed that she'll be a force to be dealt with for a few years to come when she shot the day's best round and placed second in the Class 6A golf state championships Tuesday at Emerald Valley Golf Club.
Oshiro's 1-under-par 71 was highlighted by an eagle on the 400-yard, par-5 13th hole. The result got her to 1 over for the tournament and into contention with first-day leader Haleigh Krause of Sheldon, who was several holes behind Oshiro.
But Krause answered with an eagle of her own at No. 13 and went on to a two-stroke victory.
Krause shot 74 on the second and final day to finish at even-par 144. Oshiro was at 146, two shots better than third-place Hannah Swanson of Forest Grove.
"It was OK for being here only the second time," Oshiro said of the course. "It was a little stressful, but in the end it wasn't. Normally, the second days are always better than the first."
Sophomore Daniele Giles of Crater placed 17th, shooting 83 for a 164 total.
After opening with a 75 on Monday, Oshiro birdied the second and third holes but gave the strokes back with bogeys at Nos. 4 and 5.
She was still even for the day when she got to No. 13. A big drive left her with only a 6-iron to the green, and she knocked the 150-yard shot to within 20 feet and made the putt.
Her only blemish the rest of the way was at No. 18, where she was caught near the lip of a fairway bunker and couldn't take much club to get out.
Oshiro, who finished second to the senior Krause at the Southwest Conference district tournament, said she didn't set goals for state.
"I wasn't really focusing on anything," she said, "just warming up for the summer."
