CORVALLIS — The Ashland boys and girls water polo teams won state qualifying matches against their Bend counterparts Thursday to earn berths in the state tournament next week.

The Grizzly boys rallied from a 3-2 halftime deficit and triumphed, 9-8, while the girls rolled to a 20-7 victory. Both games were at Osborn Aquatic Center, where state will be held next Friday and Saturday.

Ashland’s boys improved to 20-6 overall behind senior captain Tristan Gavin, who scored four goals, had one assist and made five steals.

Junior Devon Lancaster had two goals and two steals, and junior goalie Vincent Wright blocked 12 shots.

The Grizzlies scored three times early in the third quarter to offset the halftime deficit.

For the Ashland girls, senior captain Sabrina Scoggin tallied six goals, three assists and two steals to lead the way. Sophomore Kenya Mickey had five goals and a steal and sophomore Leilani Sukles four goals, two assists and two steals. Kelsey Gida, a senior defender, recorded a career-high three goals and two assists and drew three kick-outs, leaving Bend a player short each time.

Senior goalie Kyilyn Boehm blocked nine shots for the Grizzlies (15-6).
