An elderly couple from Grants Pass spent two nights stuck in the snow on Upper Grave Creek Road over the weekend, but made it home safely Monday.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Department said the man and woman left their home Saturday to go for a drive in the mountains in their four-wheel drive pickup. The couple didn't tell anyone where they were going, officials said.
The truck slid off the slick road and got stuck in a ditch. They were not prepared for winter weather and had only a bottle of water and a granola bar to sustain them, but made it through next two nights, officials said.
On Monday, the man, who is 80 years old, left the vehicle and walked a mile until he got cellphone service. He reached a family member, and search-and-rescue crews from Jackson and Josephine counties responded to find them.
The couple made it back home without injury.
