EUGENE — North Medford jumped to a 7-0 lead but South Eugene gradually rallied to pull away for a 62-54 victory and halt the Black Tornado’s winning streak at 14 games in a key Southwest Conference boys basketball clash Friday.

Fifth-ranked North Medford (16-5, 8-1 SWC) was seeking to clinch at least a share of the SWC title but instead saw its lead trimmed to one game by the second-place Axemen (11-8, 7-2) with three games remaining.

“We were close the whole time, but we never won a quarter, either,” said North Medford head coach Scott Plankenhorn. “They play awfully well up there in their gym and they’re a very good shooting basketball team. I thought we did a good job defensively to hold them down to what we did, but when you’re chasing and have to foul late, that’s not the place you want to be against South Eugene with so many good shooters.”

Brad Allen had 23 points and six rebounds, Joey Hunter scored nine points and Kaison Faust added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists for North Medford.

South Eugene converted 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter and 19 of 23 overall, and got 24 points from SWC leading scorer Jay Elmore.
