NORTH BEND — The St. Mary's swim team picked up three victories during the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A District 4 Swimming Championships at North Bend Municipal Pool on Saturday.

Team and event winners and those with qualifying times advance to the state championships, which are Friday and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

Jasper Zhu captured a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.45 seconds, and the Crusader boys 200 freestyle relay team also won (1:36.63).

Zhu was second in the 200 individual medley (2:05.99) and the St. Mary's boys 200 medley relay squad claimed third (1:50.78).

Cascade Christian's Christian Scaglione took second in the 50 freestyle (22.79) and Phoenix's Alec Shepherd earned second in the 100 freestyle (52.01).

On the girls side, the Crusaders' Maryn Ringger was fastest in the 100 freestyle (57.42) and earned second in the 50 freestyle (26.27). Teammate Ivy Frisbee secured second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.88) and the St. Mary's 200 freestyle relay unit was second (1:52.12).

North Bend swept the team titles.

Ringer and Zhu were named to first-team conference lists, and Frisbee, Shepherd and Scaglione received second-team recognition.

6A SWC DISTRICT: At Springfield, North Medford’s Daniel Olson placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.46 seconds and the Black Tornado’s Shai Russel-Tyler was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.53) during the Southwest Conference district championships at Willamalane Park Swim Center.

Team and event winners and those with qualifying times advance to the state championships, which are Friday and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

The North Medford girls 200 medley relay squad of Claire Ebert, Russel-Tyler, Gabby Parks and Marlena Cromwell secured second (2:00.49).

Grants Pass’ Chris Lessenich won the 200 freestyle (1:48.13) and 100 freestyle (48.88).

5A MWL DISTRICTS: At Springfield, Ashland's Chris Frownfelter finished in second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.84 seconds in the Midwestern League district championships at Willamalane Park Swim Center.

The Grizzlies' Hunter Oliver was third in the 100 backstroke (1:02.18) and the Ashland boys 400 freestyle relay squad of Baylor Wiggins, Oliver, Frownfelter and Ziji Donahoo earned third (3:47.26).

On the girls side, the Grizzlies' Bekkah Higgins placed third in the 100 butterfly (1:07.36) and Olivia McMonagle came in third in the 100 backstroke (1:11.17).

The Ashland girls 200 medley relay team of Olivia McMonagle, Angie Sherer, Higgins and Rebecca McMonagle was third (2:13.58), as was the Grizzlies' 400 freestyle relay squad (Olivia McMonagle, Rebecca McMonagle, Rachel Kahane and Higgins, 4:20.87).

Boys

Skiing

OISRA NORDIC: At Bend, Ashland's Erik Oline placed sixth in the 4,000-meter freestyle race during the Southern Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association Nordic finals at Mt. Bachelor.

The Grizzlies' Mina Devore was sixth and Lilia Chapman ninth.

In overall Southern League results, Oline finished third, Chapman sixth and Devore seventh, and the Ashland boys and girls both took third as a team.
