A Medford woman was sentenced to more than eight years in prison after admitting she sexually abused a young boy.

Misty Star Garcia, 40, of the 600 block of Northwoods Drive, pleaded guilty Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court to three felony counts of first-degree sexual abuse. The victim was 8 years old at the time Garcia made the victim massage her body, including her breasts and buttocks, in multiple incidents in February 2015.

Garcia accessed the child through the boy's father, according to Deputy District Attorney Terry Smith-Norton, who prosecuted the case. The child has since been removed from the father's home.

During the hearing, a Department of Human Services worker read a letter written by the victim with the help of a counselor, which recounted the frustration of being called a liar when he told his father of the abuse. It also told Garcia and the court that the abuse "changed my life a whole bunch."

"I would love to yell this letter, but I can't yell in written words," the letter concluded, which Circuit Court Judge Kelly Ravassipour called a "really profound statement."

"You took the innocence of a child," Ravassipour said before sentencing. "What you did was awful."

Ravassipour sentenced Garcia to a total of 100 months in the Oregon Department of Corrections, followed by 10 years of post-prison supervision. She will be required to register as a sex offender, and was ordered to pay restitution in an amount yet to be determined.

As part of the plea agreement, felony counts of tampering with a witness and first-degree sodomy, alleging she forced the child to perform oral sex, were dropped.
