Jackson County officials debuted the new $6.2 million District Attorney's Office Thursday.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony held at 2 p.m. included public tours of the two-story, 22,342-square-foot building, at 815 W. 10th St., Medford.
DA's Office employees have been working out of their new digs for several months, but the recent completion of the adjacent public parking lot — paving over where the three old buildings used to be — allowed for a formal dedication, DA Beth Heckert said.
"(It's) a big improvement over our prior buildings when we were in three separate buildings," Heckert said. "We had around 13,000 square feet, I think, there."
County reserves paid for the construction. Adroit Construction Co. of Ashland was the general contractor, and Ogden Roemer Wilkerson Architecture of Medford developed the design.
Building features include conference rooms and suite spaces for the grand jury, public restrooms and secure employee parking. The added space is a benefit to the 50 or so full- and part-time employees, giving them more places to meet with clients, witnesses, law enforcement and other lawyers.
"Some of the things we're dealing with are confidential. There may be stuff that's not filed, that's not in the media yet," said Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz.
It's Heckert's third building in her 29 years of working for the county. She started in an annex of the Jackson County Courthouse, then moved to the three buildings on 10th Street in about 1988.
In 2013, a man tried to blow up the DA's office with a propane tank — a failed attempt that shattered some windows. The incident helped move plans along for the new office.
"That definitely gave us a boost," Heckert said. "It was something (former District Attorney) Mark Huddleston had been talking about. We were just out of space. We didn't have any more room."
Alan Leroy McVay, of White City, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution for his crime.
