ASHLAND — A squirrel fried a major electrical line earlier this morning in Ashland and caused a large power outage that has snarled traffic and slowed the city to a crawl.

The squirrel came in contact with a city-owned electrical line at Pacific Power's Nevada Street substation, according to Pacific Power.

Ashland police said traffic lights throughout the city were off, causing traffic jams downtown and elsewhere on Main Street.

City electrical crews were busy isolating the fried line and rerouting electricity to customers through Ashland's other two substations, according to an Ashland news release.

Crews hope to have power restored later this morning.
