On the eve of the May 16, 2017, special election, the Jackson County Clerk's Office was looking at a voter turnout of less than 15 percent.
As of Monday, the county Elections Division had received ballots from 20,450 of the county's 144,453 registered voters — about 14.2 percent.
"Very little, let's put it that way," said Jackson County Clerk Chris Walker of ballots received. "It's definitely in the slow range."
The county's 44,801 registered Democrats accounted for the highest percentage of ballots, with 8,724 or 19.5 percent, voting, while 8,036 ballots had been received from the county's 47,976 registered Republicans, or 16.8 percent.
The 11,133 voters who align with other parties such as Libertarian and Pacific Green had turned in 1,228 ballots, or 11 percent.
The county had received only 2,462 ballots from the county's 40,543 nonaffiliated voters, or about 6 percent. That number has made the biggest impact, Walker said.
"The nonaffiliated number is really taking down the percentage," she said.
Ballots must be received by the Elections Division or put in an official elections drop box no later than 8 p.m. Tuesday to be counted.
The special election includes three measures.
Measure 15-168 would impose a property tax of 99 cents per $1,000 for a four-year levy, intended to maintain fire department staffing levels at Jackson County Fire District No. 4.
Measure 15-169 would allow the Rogue River School District to issue $3.34 million in bonds to improve district facilities.
Measure 15-170 would impose a 3-cents-per-gallon tax on diesel fuel dealers in the city of Talent, intended to raise money for street repairs.
Contested races in the election include four positions on the Medford School Board, two on the Central Point School District board, and one position for the Eagle Point School District board. The Jackson County Library District board, Rogue Valley Transportation District, and Southern Oregon Education Service District also have contested races.
