Oregon Department of Forestry firefighters will conduct a live fire training from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 22, near the intersection of Truax and Newland roads, north of Central Point. Thursday’s field exercise will conclude a three-week fire school in the Southwest Oregon District. Smoke may be visible in parts of Jackson County throughout the day.

The training allows fire crews to work in a grass fire situation in a controlled environment monitored by fire training staff. For some new hires, it will be their first exposure to an active wildland fire, according to a release from ODF. Beginners and experienced firefighters alike will work on mobile attack, pump-and-roll tactics, burnout operations, resource ordering and fire ground communications to help them prepare for the fire season.

Use of the property, which is covered by tall, dry vegetation, was donated by the Oregon Department of Transportation for fire season training purposes.
