Motorists are now allowed to install studded tires on their vehicles through March 31, 2018.
Studded tire season began today.
The Oregon Department of Transportation recommends some alternatives to the specialized tires, which they say cause millions of dollars in damage each year to roads around the state. A 2014 study concluded the tires cause about $8.5 million in damage annually, according to a news release.
Studded-tire alternatives include tire chains and traction tires, which "work about as well as studded tires on ice, but work better than studded tires or regular tires in most other winter conditions," ODOT said.
