Table Rock Road slowed to a crawl early Saturday afternoon after fire destroyed an older RV parked in a makeshift junkyard.
Medford Fire-Rescue called in the fire in the 3100 block of Table Rock Road just after 12:30 p.m. after chasing a dark column of smoke visible from most of the Medford area. They found a camper fully engulfed in flames, according to Medford Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Ron Nelson, whose firefighters were assisted by crews from Jackson County Fire District 3.
"It was a pretty good column of smoke," Nelson said.
The camper on fire had been occupied by a man and woman, Nelson said, adding that the pair had fled the scene by the time crews arrived.
"We don't know where they're at," Nelson said.
A sedan with its trunk open showed significant fire damage from the blaze, but it's unclear whether the vehicle had been in a driveable condition before the fire. Multiple vehicles missing tires, wheels and other critical parts were scattered on the property, as was disabled machinery such as a lawnmower on its side.
Another fire had condemned a garage on the same property last week, according to Nelson, and the adjacent home had been boarded up and marked condemned. As fire crews knocked down the blaze just after 1 p.m., Jackson County sheriff's deputies and Medford police were on the property interviewing witnesses.
