Don and Liz Karpen celebrated their 60th anniversary Sept. 15, and they marked the occasion with a trip to Victoria, British Columbia, in late September.

Liz and Don met in 1956 while attending San Jose State College. Upon graduation in 1957, Don joined the Air Force. They were married that September and then traveled in November to San Antonio, Texas, where Don started pilot training.

After receiving his wings, Don completed fighter training, with his first assignment to Misawa, Japan. Liz and Don traveled to many locations during his 27-year career in the Air Force. Don flew 210 combat missions in an F-4 Phantom in Vietnam.

Upon retirement in 1984, they moved from Corvallis to Ashland for two years and then to a home built on 15 acres south of Talent, where they enjoy country living and visiting family. Don was in management at Bear Creek Corporation for 10 years and is still active as a flight instructor.
