Police have identified the driver of a box truck killed yesterday morning in a rural Jackson County head-on crash involving two heavy vehicles as Douglas Mitchell, 43, of Shady Cove.

At about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Mitchell headed eastbound driving a 2018 International box truck when the vehicle crossed the center line into oncoming traffic near Highway 140 near milepost 22. Mitchell's truck came into the path of a 2007 Sterling flatbed semitrailer driven by Tim Sheldon, 48, of Newell, California, according to a release Oregon State Police issued Thursday.

Sheldon sustained only minor injuries in the crash, which occurred roughly 25 miles east of Medford. Why the vehicle Mitchell had been driving went into oncoming traffic isn't yet known.

The crash closed both lanes of traffic Wednesday for several hours, and the vehicles weren't cleared from the scene until roughly 2:50 p.m., according to Oregon Department of Transportation reports. By Wednesday afternoon, flaggers had reopened the roadway by diverting traffic to the shoulders.
