On  KDRV-Channel 12 recently, they introduced some new guy as chief meteorologist. What happened to chief meteorologist Kate McKenna? Her fans want to know.

— Jim H., Medford

Sorry to have to break the news, Jim, but McKenna has left the area. She's gone back to her home state of Alabama.

Her last broadcast was on Dec. 22, 2017. McKenna also announced her departure from the Medford area on her Facebook page. Like you, other local residents were surprised she was leaving, including one woman who said, "We knew you were too good to be true."

McKenna is working for WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama, which has a bigger market than Medford.

Reached by phone, McKenna said she moved back to be closer to her family and husband, who lives in Mobile, Alabama.

"It's my first time in Huntsville," she said.

Her husband plans to move up from Mobile shortly to join her in Huntsville, which is well-known for its aerospace industry.

She joined KDRV in June 2014. Before working in Medford, McKenna worked as a morning meteorologist at KAVU in Victoria, Texas, ABC affiliate WBKO in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and CBS affiliate WKRG in Mobile, Alabama.

She is working just as hard at the new station, getting up on her first day at work Jan. 12 at 1:30 a.m. to report on snow and ice.
