A substitute teacher died March 9 before school began at Crater High School, the Southern Oregon Education Service District confirmed Tuesday.

Michael Bradley, an SOESD employee, experienced a "major medical event" while preparing for classes, Central Point Superintendent Samantha Steele said in a statement.

"We’re very, very saddened," said Jack Musser, interim human resources manager for the SOESD. "Unfortunate is an understatement."

Musser declined to provide more details about the death, "out of respect for the family," he said.

Ashley Blakely, public information officer for Jackson County Fire District 3, said a single emergency unit responded to a medical call at 8:09 a.m. Friday, and the last emergency respondent left at 9:03 a.m. She declined to give further details, citing medical privacy laws.

Central Point School District initially referred questions to the SOESD, but later issued its own statement.

"Mr. Bradley, who was also a Crater High School alumnus, will be missed by students, staff and the community," the statement said.
