James A. Nickerson III, also known as Jim, Jimmy, and Tator to his friends and family lost his life to a house fire at his White City, Oregon home January 14, 2017. He was born November 19, 1970 in Coos Bay, Oregon. In 1976 he moved with his family to Fairbanks, Alaska where Jim excelled in athletics including football and hockey.

Jim moved back to Coos Bay, Ore. to finish school at Marshfield High School and graduated in 1989. He attended College of the Siskiyous playing football as a walk-on and later attended and played football for Sacramento State.

In 2006 Jim married his long-time partner, Paula Haskett Nickerson. The two were well known as an outgoing and welcoming couple. Continuing in a life of fitness, Jim won the Deadlift World Championship in 2009 and 2010, then opened Elite Power and Fitness in 2011 in Medford, Ore. The small gym was well respected with Jim at the forefront as the owner and face of the community.

Always quick with a smile and an infectious laugh, Jim had the ability to brighten any room. He was remarkably witty and held a powerful presence that inevitably drew people near. A pillar of strength and compassion, Jim was a steadfast support for many of his friends and family. His loss is felt at the deepest levels and he will be terribly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Paula Nickerson; father, James A. Nickerson, Jr.; mother, Vicki Nickerson; sister, Melanie Nickerson; nieces, Savanah Nickerson and Kristine Chausse; nephew, Mitchell Chausse. He is also survived by his loving in-laws, Al and Pauline Haskett; brother-in-laws, Brian, Scott, Kirk Hasket and family; and many aunts; uncles; cousins; and longtime friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Illa and James A. Nickerson; maternal grandparents, Jane and Orlando Stevens; and nephew, Chandler Nickerson.
