December 26, 1941 - March 3, 2017
Catherine (Cathi) Kennedy, our dear mother, sister, grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully March 3, 2017.
Cathi was born December 26, 1941 in Alhambra, California to parents, Robert and Vivian Smith (Anderson). They raised Cathi in Long Beach, Calif. along with her sister, Marjorie Smith. Cathi attended Long Beach State University, graduating in 1962 with a degree in education. Cathi enjoyed teaching elementary school for many years, including some time spent living in Okinawa, Japan, teaching children for the Department of Defense. Along with some of her co-teachers from Okinawa, Cathi toured Europe, enjoying the lack of speed limits in her Karmann Ghia. She later lived in California teaching school, living on the beach, and sailing her catamaran.
Cathi married David Kennedy and had two sons, Sam Kennedy and Chuck Kennedy. She was a homemaker in Oregon during this time, guiding her sons and providing a loving home for them to grow up in. With their mother’s constantly expressed confidence in them to support and encourage them, both her sons followed in her footsteps and obtained college degrees. After they graduated she traveled to them and spent time with them, and later with her daughters-in-law and her grandchildren, bonding over her love of card games, particularly rummy.
Cathi cared about the people around her. She made steady donations to charities such as the Salvation Army and the Wounded Warriors. Cathi attended the Center for Spiritual Living in Medford. She enjoyed making new friends and getting together to play cards with people, regularly participating in pinochle games. Cathi loved nurturing her garden, spending hours on end weeding to make room for her flowers.
Cathi is survived by her sons, Sam Kennedy and Chuck Kennedy; her grandchildren, Maya Talbert, Milo Talbert, Emily Kennedy, Dean Kennedy, Stephen Kennedy, and Ian Kennedy; and her sister, Margie Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Smith and Vivian Smith,
Cathi touched our world with love and appreciation in many ways. She loved and blessed us, and we miss her and remember her lovingly.
A celebration of life will take place April 1, 2017 in Medford. If you would like to attend, please contact Karen at 541-799-1091.
