July 13, 1919 - March 13, 2017

VerNetta passed away peacefully March 13, 2017 at home in Palm Desert, California after a wonderful 97-year life.

VerNetta was born on a ranch run by her parents in Ogallala, Nebraska. She was the only girl, and the youngest of three children including her brothers, George and Joye. As a teenager, she moved west to Oregon with her parents and began working to help support the family; first at the Ashland police department, then in Salem for the state government.

While in Salem she met her future husband, Phil Brainerd. After being stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco during WWII, they returned to Medford, Ore. to raise a family and open Brainerd's Studio and Camera Shop. VerNetta coordinated the financial, marketing, and personnel aspects of the business. She was a pioneer in local television advertising and she became the first president of the Medford Downtown Merchants Association.

After their retirement they moved to Rancho Mirage and then Palm Desert, Calif. where VerNetta continued to reside. VerNetta and Phil were partners in both life and business, and they were married for over 53 years until Phil's death in 1995.

She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Brainerd, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. and her son, Paul Brainerd, of Seattle, Washington.

No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to KPBS Public Broadcasting, 5200 Campanile Drive, San Diego, Calif. 92182.
