January 22, 1926 - March 27, 2017

Mary A. Plummer, 91, of Medford, Oregon, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully March 27, 2017.

Mary was born January 22, 1926 in Plymouth, Massachusetts and grew up in Manomet, Massachusetts; spending her days walking the beaches, watching the sea, and breathing the salt air that would forever be her place of comfort and peace.

She was an outstanding student and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of New Hampshire. Mary worked in advertising and public relations in Chicago and was also a stewardess for American Airlines serving many notable travelers. She loved her time in the airline industry and enjoyed sharing stories of both the kindnesses and sometimes less than civil behaviors of some of her guests.

Mary was working in North Conway, New Hampshire when she met the love of her life, James W. Plummer. It was love at first sight for both and they traveled through life together with enthusiasm, curiosity, and joy. They skied, hiked, traveled the world, raised four children, and did it all side by side. With them on many of these adventures were their cherished dogs, especially Jenny, the golden retriever who was the great canine love of their lives.

Mary was deeply spiritual and intellectual. She shared her love of learning and reading with many children, volunteering for many years with the SMART program and Laubach Literacy. She taught CCD for several years and was also a Eucharistic Minister at her local Catholic parish.

Mary was always kind and she had a beautiful smile that she was quick to share. She was a lifelong conservationist, never wasting a plastic bag or a scrap of food. She had all the admirable values of the generation that endured the Depression and World War II. She lived a joyful life guided by high principles, morals, and discipline.

Family and faith were the centerpieces of Mary’s life. She is mourned by her children, Jack Plummer (Tracie) of North Plains, Ore.; Janet Plummer (Don Rushmer) of West Linn, Ore.; and Julia Howlett (Daniel) of Polson, Montana; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Emily, Julia, Bobby, Zach, Danielle, Caden, James, Mabel, and Ella. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim; and her eldest son, Robert.

A Catholic Mass and reception will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Rogue Valley Manor Sunrise Room. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Jefferson Public Radio or Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford, Ore.
