July 26, 1923 - April 27, 2017

Robert Jackson Bateman, 93, passed away peacefully April 27, 2017 at home in Berkeley, California. Born July 26, 1923 in Medford, Oregon, he spent his childhood in Oregon and Washington. In 1942 his family moved to South Pasadena, Calif. where he graduated from high school.

A veteran of World War II, his feet were frozen during the fearsome Battle of Hurtgen Forest. After a lengthy recuperation in England and the United States he was discharged and came to Berkley.

He enjoyed worldwide travel with his brother, Roger and Roger’s wife, Freddie. On one memorable trip he retraced his route from Normandy through Luxembourg and Belgium to the area of the Hurtgen battle.

His last years were the happiest of his life, due in large measure to the love and attention from his two caregivers, Rod and Maria Rodman.

He is survived by his brother, Roger of Corpus Christi, Texas and Roger’s children, David Bateman (Karen) of Plano, Texas; Sally Baulch (Howard) of Dublin, Ohio; and Susan Bateman of Corpus Christi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Bessie Bateman.

He will be interred in Medford, Oregon. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. May 9, 2017. Arrangements are in care of Perl Funeral Home of Medford.
