The Oregon Army National Guard is deeply saddened by the passing of Lt. Col. (Ret.) Scot K. Caughran, of Bend, Oregon. He passed away May 5, 2017, in Bend, Ore., at the age of 44. He was born July 24, 1972, in Ashland, Ore. to Larry and Linda Caughran.
Caughran initially enlisted in the Oregon National Guard as a Tow Dragon Repairman. However, he was immediately selected, because of his leadership potential, to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) where he graduated at the top of his class. He married the love of his life, Darcy, in September of 2001.
Caughran served more than 24 years in a variety of positions before his retirement as a lieutenant colonel. He commissioned through the Oregon OCS program in 2000 and his first assignment was as a lieutenant with Bravo Company, 1-186 IN Reg. in Klamath Falls, Ore. His other assignments were protocol officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-186 IN Reg., which included a deployment to the Sinai in 2002; reconnaissance platoon leader with Delta Company, 1-186 IN Reg., in Grants Pass, Ore.; Bravo Company commander, 1-186 IN Reg., with time in both McMinnville and Klamath Falls, Ore., and a deployment to Afghanistan in 2006. In 2007 he became the commander of Bravo Company, 2-162 IN Reg. in Corvallis, Ore., and in 2008 became the operations officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1-82 CAV in Bend, Ore. In 2013, he became the battalion commander of 2-162 IN Reg. and in 2014 led more than 400 Soldiers on a deployment to Kabul, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Caughran also served full-time with the Oregon National Guard’s Counterdrug unit from 2003-2005. He retired from the Oregon Army National Guard in March 2017 as an operations officer with Joint Force Headquarters.
His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals, two Meritorious Service Medals, seven Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, five Army Reserve Component Achievement Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, and many other additional awards and badges.
Caughran also received the MacArthur Leadership Award in 2009 for his civic involvement. He earned a master degree in business administration in 2012 from Grantham University.
He is survived by his wife, Darcy; three children, daughters, Morgan and Hailey and son, Logan, all of Bend, Ore.; his parents, Linda and Larry Caughran of Talent, Ore.; sisters, Kelli Ensley of Butte Falls, Ore. and Shannon Biondi, of Redmond, Ore.; and many other beloved family members.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd, Portland, Ore. Attendees are encouraged to bring flowers, cards, and letters of condolence for the family.
