Caroline Marie Chavez, 90, went to be with Our Lord Tuesday, June 13, 2017. She was the beloved daughter of two, sister to four, wife of one, mother of eight, grandmother to 15, and great-grandmother to 11.
She was born in Millikans Corner, California (now known as Santa Clara) in February 1927, to Manuel Machado and Anne Silveira, farmers and ranchers. This is where Caroline acquired her love of the outdoors and agriculture.
She was the bookkeeper and representative for the Portuguesa Sociedade do Espirito Santo (SES) until she entered San Jose State University where she further explored her passionate love of music.
In 1947, after his return from serving in the Navy during WWII, she married Joaquin Chavez, whom she had known since high school. They established their residence in Santa Clara where they embraced their first-born son Robert; daughters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Caroline, and Mary; and sons, John, Thomas, and Joseph.
In 1965 Caroline relocated with her family to King City, Calif., where her family flourished. Instilling the importance of higher education and deep faith in God, her gifts to the world increased exponentially.
She resumed bookkeeping at CornNuts in Greenfield, Calif. while continuing to raise her children, teaching Catechism at Holy Trinity Church, and guiding her children through myriad organizational activities including 4H, dance, music lessons, and sports.
She moved to Medford in 2010 to be closer to her now-grown children.
She is survived by her brother, Manuel Machado Clements, Calif.; sisters, Irene Chargin, Tracy, Calif, Blanche Bolstad, Carmichael Calif, and Marian Evans, Turlock, Calif; as well as children, Robert and Barbara Chavez, Susanville, Calif.,Margaret and Tom Tenold, Bonanza, Ore, Elizabeth Manfredi, Fresno, Calif., Thomas and Tina Chavez of Ashland, Ore., Caroline Gaghan Norfolk, Virginia, and Mary Dreyer Santa Rosa, Calif; nieces, .nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years and sons John and Joseph.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m., June 16, 2017 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland, Ore. followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday also at the church. She will be laid to rest at Eagle Point National Cemetery Monday June 19 at 9 a.m.
