December 31, 1944 - June 26, 2017

Ricky Ray Richey, 72, passed away peacefully after suffering from Parkinson's at Ashley Manor in Medford, Oregon Monday, June 26, 2017 surrounded by his family. From his birth in Medford, Ore. to his death on Monday, he was a friend to all bringing joy to everyone with a smile and a kind heart. His love of Christ was apparent not in his words as much as in how he lived his life every day.

Rick graduated from Phoenix High School in 1963 and went to study architecture at the University of Oregon where he was picked by Bill Bowerman to throw javelin for Oregon. Later, Rick would join an elite group of athletes and be inducted into the U of O Hall of Fame. After a tour in Vietnam, Rick returned to the University of Oregon where he earned his bachelor degree in Architecture, a bachelor degree in business, and then a master degree in business.

Rick and his wife of over 50 years, Cynthia Owens Richey, along with their two sons, Eric and Brad, moved back to Southern Ore. where Rick worked for Jackson County, Jackson County Federal Savings and Loan, Cap Vandagrift, and later, on his own as a real estate appraiser. After many years of hard work, Rick earned his designation and became a highly respected member of the Appraisal Institute.

Rick was very active in the community and belonged to many organizations over the years. He was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity, president of the Phoenix Kiwanis, member of the Medford Rotary, board member of the Girl Scouts of America, elder of Phoenix Church of Christ where he also taught Bible classes, loved playing Santa Claus for families all over the valley at Christmas, and ran a Bible study for over 23 years out of his home with his wife, Cynthia.

Never once complaining of his ailment or the pain it caused, Rick lived a life of joy and peace because of his faith in Christ. He was not only an inspiration, but a source of contagious joy and light.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Othar Cy Richey; mother, Doris Harper; step-mother, Marie Richey; father in-law, Roscoe Owens; and mother in-law, Dorthy Owens. He is survived by his wife Cynthia; son, Eric and daughter in-law, Ewa and their children, Julian and Piper; and son, Brad and his children, Braden and Liam.

Memorial service will be held July 8, at 1:00 p.m. at Ashland Christian Fellowship, 50 W Hersey St, Ashland, OR. A reception will follow the service, and the family is looking forward to everyone fellowshipping and visiting, as Rick always got such joy having people over and visiting with them. A private graveside service will follow.

The family wants to thank the amazing staff at Ashley Manor on Arrowhead Drive in Medford for being so loving and sweet to Rick his last two months. Their care and love was amazing and a great help to the family.
