Dan passed away quietly in his sleep. He was first-born to Dorothy and Wayne Jarrell and beloved brother to his four sisters.
Dan was a graduate of Medford Senior High School. He was on the Black Tornado football team, State Champions under the legendary coach, Fred Speigelberg in '69-'70. Dan enlisted in the Navy right out of high school and spent much of his service in Japan. After his military career he returned to Medford and completed his Master's degree in Biology at Southern Oregon State College. He was a substitute teacher in Medford and an epic river guide on the upper and lower Rogue and upper Klamath Rivers for 15 years. Fishing was his passion. He then moved to Chehalis, Washington and taught high school sciences, biology, chemistry, and physics for the Adna school district. His innovative teaching style was featured in the local newspapers on several occasions. He was also the golf coach for boys and girls. Dan was an outdoor enthusiast and loved fishing, golf, hunting, skiing, river running, and photography.
Dan is survived by his sisters, Dianne (Russel) Tweedy, Christine (Joe) Zabala, Susan Stone, and Laura (Jeff) DeBoer; and nieces, Melynda Tweedy, Amanda (Dan) Everson, Stephanie (Jorge) Rosales, Sarah (Nick) Dietz, and Thomas (Amber) Stone.
Services with full military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. October 12, 2017 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Arrangements in care of Waud’s Funeral Home, Tillamook, OR. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org, 1-800-272-3900.
