March 11, 1927 - October 10, 2017
Hazel Ladena Ratty, of Jacksonville, Oregon, passed away peacefully October 10, 2017, surrounded by her family. Hazel was born March 11, 1927, in Medford, Ore. to Dean and Flora Saltmarsh.
Hazel’s family were among some of the earliest settlers who came to the Rogue Valley in 1846 on the Oregon Trail, then mined the Sterling Ditch in the Applegate area. One of her earliest and favorite memories was going to Tallow Box Fire Lookout with her father.
On December 7, 1948, she married Wayne Ratty. Together they had six children. Wayne died in 1979. Their first child, Michael Joseph died as an infant. Hazel worked packing pears in the Rogue Valley for Naumes Packing Co. and Harry & David.
Hazel spent some of her last years gathering genealogy and writing down things that she had been told, and things that she remembered about growing up in the Applegate area. Her hobbies were crocheting and many kinds of crafts, but her favorite things to do were to go any time the car started, and family get togethers. She was a member of the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a long-time member of the Little Butte Mountain Men and was a pretty good shot too.
Hazel is survived by her five remaining children, Dan (Beth), Mike (Robin), Deanna (Pete), Kenny (Debbie), and Lori; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her four brothers, Earl, Richard, Melvin, and Curt.
A memorial get-together will be held November 11 at 1:00 p.m., at the Southern Oregon Labor Temple, 4480 Rogue Valley Hwy, Central Point, OR. All family and friends are welcome to attend. Please bring a story about Hazel to share. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, alz.org.
