August 14, 1932 - February 16, 2018

Esperanza (Espie) Beverly (Ortiz) Dale, 85, passed away peacefully in her sleep February 16, 2018 with her two daughters at her bedside at her cottage in Milwaukie, Oregon. “Esperanza” means “hope” in Spanish, which was her first language spoken at home. Born August 14, 1932 to Luz and Alfonso Ortiz in Huntington, Ore., she was the youngest of five sisters, including Helen (Gordon), Alice (Wirth), Carmen (Sullivan), and Margaret (Yeates).

Espie married Loyal A. (L.A.) Dale and soon after moved to Ashland, Ore. where they raised four children. In addition to being a homemaker, Espie also worked for a time as a cord board operator for the phone company and, later on, in retail sales at an upscale clothing store in nearby Medford. When her boys were little she was their Cub Scout Den Mother. After 20 years in Southern Oregon, she and L.A. moved to Eugene, Ore. where they retired.

Espie loved spending time with family and friends, particularly around the dinner table where guests were always welcome, stories were often told and laughter was frequent and sometimes loud. She had a great sense of humor, which could include practical jokes, and when she laughed her eyes twinkled. Travelers, visitors, students, nieces, nephews, neighbors, grandchildren, friends of friends, and pets all enjoyed an open invitation in her comfortable and inviting home. Espie loved celebrations, especially birthdays and holidays, which were always best with cake or pie and a thoughtful card or note. She was inclusive of extended family and friends, which was particularly appreciated by the elderly folks she visited regularly over the years and came to love while volunteering at assisted living and nursing homes.

Espie and L.A. were well-traveled, taking numerous trips over the years throughout the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Europe, Japan, China, Hong Kong, and Australia. She was a collector extraordinaire and generous with her many gifts. Several of her close friendships extended for over 66 years. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Espie is survived by her sisters, Carmen and Margaret; her many nieces and nephews; her children, Loy (TC) Dale, Alice Dale (Frank Evans), Cindi Dale (Tod Feuerman), and KC Dale (Chrissy Bloome); and her eight favorite grandchildren on the planet.

A celebration of life will be held in late April in Baker City, Ore.
