Anti-Semitic graffiti disturbing

I’m a Jewish immigrant to the U.S. My maternal and paternal grandparents and numerous members of my extended family perished in the gas ovens during the Holocaust — my mother fled from a death march.

It is deeply disturbing to me that somebody painted “Anne Frank Oven” on a transformer box in the railroad district in Ashland. We cannot allow hatred, racism, anti-Semitism, fear- mongering, suppression of the press, alternative facts and deconstruction of our democratic institutions to run rampant in our country. We need to learn lessons from what preceded World War I and II in Europe. I feel that we're in a historic struggle for the democratic future of our country.

Roy Rogers, Bill Belichick and the Bible

Getting a bit tired of the constant reporting of chaos in our world, I decided to watch a Roy Rogers old western. It was calming and sweet. However, as Roy Rogers is riding Trigger into the community of Buckaroo, whistling and singing, there is a sign posted at the edge of this community. It says, "Beware tramps, mountebanks, gamblers, scallywags and thieves. There is only one place in town where you are welcome, our jail! If you don't want to visit it, keep moving!"

I really had to laugh that what is going on in our world, which is serious, is not new and has been going on since the beginning of time.

Bill Belichick, coach of the New England Patriots, has a sign posted in his facility, "Ignore the noise," telling his players to ignore criticisms from people and the media.

2nd Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

Fight the fire

I agree with C. Boyer’s statement, “Illegal means illegal” (March 6). The lack of law enforcement against employers of undocumented workers creates demand for their cheap labor. These folks come here because there is employment for them. What would happen if the laws were enforced against their employers? My guess is the flow of undocumented immigrants would significantly diminish and those already here would self-deport.

So why are employers not subject to the same rule of law? Why does the federal government not mandate an electronic verification system? Why is the federal government complicit? Is it because our economy benefits from the exploitation of undocumented workers? Is it the billions of taxes that flow into the U.S. Treasury (see www.ssa.gov./oact//NOTES/pdf_note/note151.pdf)? In 2010 alone over 13 billion was collected in social security taxes from undocumented workers.

By the way, Canada has an electronic verification system and tough enforcement against employers of illegal labor. Canada does not have an illegal immigration problem. Yes, C. Boyer is right about one thing; illegal means illegal. I say fight the fire, not the smokescreen!

Investigate thoroughly

Doug Breidenthal, ex-Jackson County commissioner, must be thoroughly investigated for alleged crimes. Excellent reporting by the Mail Tribune has brought to public's attention possible illegal conduct both while in office and after. This is an extremely serious matter.

One issue that needs to be addressed is Jackson County Administrator Danny Jordan's  possible lack of careful awareness and oversight, and knowledge of, Commissioner Breidenthal's conflicts of interest while in office.
