Don't surrender freedoms

Most other countries were founded on some commonality, i.e., language, culture, geography, etc. The United States was founded on an idea of self-evident truths: "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, that among thses are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

This idea is derived from great thinkers such as Aristotle, Cicero, Aquinas, Locke and others.

In spite of the immense freedoms we enjoy, there are some free citizens who publish here urging us to join them in surrendering our human rights to the state. Rather than making their own important decisions, such as in health care, self defense, religion, assembly, etc., they prefer to cede control of these personal responsibilities to faceless, nameless, life-tenured bureaucrats. Is it laziness or ignorance that propels these folks to cast away their reason-based human rights?

Please take time to read the Declaration of Independence! Understanding and appreciating the foundations of our freedoms might enlighten and prevent some from wanting to surrender them foolishly.

Railroad Park support

Yes, what’s gone wrong? Many years we supported the train park. First our children, then their children. As a family, we had the best of experiences.

My daughter is a kindergarten teacher. Before train park season, she traditionally takes her class on a picnic at the Railroad Park picnic area. This June: “I’ll never go there again!”

Why? “The parking is whittled down to nothing and the homeless were congregated there harassing the picnickers!” Intimidated.

I’m sure we’d all return to enjoy and support the most unique historical and joyful, simple experience because history is precious indeed!

A new divide

Historically, liberals and conservatives have often disagreed on how best to tackle the issues facing the country. However, they have usually managed to agree well enough on what the issues were to arrive at a reasonable compromise.

Some apparently believe that this process has broken down because the liberals are "sore losers." It is hard to understand why they would object to this breach, since the president's campaign was based on divisiveness and they got exactly what they voted for.

The current lack of communication may be because the country is no longer divided into "liberal" and "conservative" factions. Instead, it is divided into those who are in dismay and those who are in denial.

What was missing?

On one of America's most celebrated holidays we usually see our soldiers past and current, our bands from all over, celebrities from far and local but strangely enough, did anyone see what was missing this year? Many of your state and federal representatives from the Republican Party.

Can't reform health care, can't fix tax loopholes, can't keep their leader from shooting his mouth off, can't show their faces due to fear of public criticism that is hot, heavy and way overdue.
