The United States is a democratic republic and has functioned as a beacon for liberty for over 200 years. In the past year our country’s principles have been under attack.
Our freedom of the press, the First Amendment, has been labeled “Fake News;” the FBI is being discredited, and its director has stepped down while other officials have been accused of misgivings; our relationships with England and other European countries are at an all-time low, but we have better rapport with Russia.
This administration is currently under investigation by the House, Senate and the Special Counsel. This letter isn’t fake, but our way of life is being threatened!
We need universal care
In an interview in 2006 the great writer Studs Terkel said, "We are the only industrialized nation in the world that does not have universal health care. We are also the only industrialized nation in the world that still has the death penalty. In these two cases, we seem to favor death over life."
People forget that we require insurance for all cars because someone on the road without insurance is a danger to all of us. So too are people without health insurance; the germs they may carry are dangerous to everyone, even the rich. We need universal health care, or we could perish in the next big viral outbreak.
Also, many people on death row have been found to be innocent when the DNA evidence was finally looked at. This country has put innocent people to death!
Somehow we need to turn these things around and join the civilized world. It seems we just don't care about the poor in this country, as they are the ones who lack health insurance and who wind up on death row. No one can pursue the American Dream from their deathbed — whether at home or in prison.

Greenhouse gases not carbon
Last week’s Point/Counterpoint missed the point. The Tribune asked, “Would the Jordan Cove LNG project be the biggest carbon emitter in the state?” This was the wrong question to ask. “Carbon emitters” are not the only problem; the real issue is greenhouse gases, of which carbon is just one. When the question is wrong, so too is the answer.
Global warming is caused by GHG emissions. Carbon dioxide is one, but it has the lowest potency. Far worse is methane — of which the Jordan Cove LNG project would not only be leaking, but the gas it would export comes from fracking. Natural gas is 90 percent methane and it leaks from fracking source to combustion sink at a devastatingly high rate. So much leakage occurs that natural gas is at least as bad as coal, if not much worse.
John Paul Williams, displaying his affiliation with a pro-natural gas pipeline organization, isn’t the best person to address this question. As Upton Sinclair wrote: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”
It is alarming that the Mail Tribune, offers what should be called an unpaid advertisement for Pembina.
