The stone shelter on top of Cape Perpetua — touted as the best viewpoint on the Oregon Coast — was built by young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps, serving their country for one dollar and three meals a day during the Great Depression. As glad as they probably were to have the job, any job, they must have scratched their heads over this project.

After all, Cape Perpetua in 1934 was hardly the popular tourist spot it has since become. It was remote — still is.....
