RED BLUFF, Calif. — Sloppy play cost the South Medford baseball team in Game 1 of a season-opening doubleheader, but Jack Thompson and Jake Melton came up big as the Panthers won the nightcap, 12-10.

Red Bluff won the opener, 4-3.

In Game 2, there were six lead changes.

Thompson completing a five-run sixth inning with a two-run single after Melton had given South Medford a 9-7 lead with a two-run single of his own.

In the opener, Melton slammed a pair of solo home runs, but South Medford committed five errors. His first homer came in the third inning and his second came in the fifth, cutting Red Bluff’s lead to 3-2 before Jalen Parnell tied the game at 3-all for Panthers on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth.

Trent Coates’ sacrifice fly won it for Red Bluff.

Melton was 2-for-4 and Ethan Whitney 2-for-3. Whitney went the distance on the mound, allowing just one earned run on four hits, three strikeouts and two walks.
