GRANTS PASS — Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Grants Pass softball team needed a spark and got it in a big way on one mighty swing by Madi Naylor on Saturday.
Naylor’s grand slam highlighted a four-run frame and the Cavers used that momentum to secure an 8-5 victory over Thurston in nonleague action at Grants Pass High.
“That was a pretty big hit,” said GP head coach Donnie Bellum. “We really needed something to happen there.”
Devin Ireland had opened the fourth by getting hit by a pitch, then Hailey Yount singled and Jordan Kuykendall reached on a fielder’s choice that failed to produce an out. Two pitches later, Naylor and company were rounding the bases for the Cavers (2-0).
Brooklyn Hurd finished 3-for-4 with two runs and Ireland drove in two runs with a sixth-inning double. Kylie Rucker also had two hits for GP, which could not get in Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader because of rain.
Olivia Schmidt was 2-for-2 with two RBIs to pace Thurston (0-2).
