ROSEBURG — After Roseburg’s shut out South Medford in the opener of a Southwest Conference baseball doubleheader Monday, Panthers senior pitcher Ethan Whitney responded with a gem of his own.

Whitney tossed a three-hitter, allowing one earned run, with eight strikeouts and two walks in a 4-1 victory. The Indians (7-5, 3-2 SWC) claimed the opener, 4-0.

Jaalen Owens got the Panthers (5-5, 1-3 SWC) started in Game 2 with a two-run home run over the left-field wall in the second inning.

The Panthers added two more in the fourth inning, highlighted by Daniel Shenk’s RBI double. Shenk hit two doubles in the game while Clint Campbell finished 3-for-4 and Robby Carle 2-for-4.

In Game 1, the damage for the Panthers came in the fourth inning, when they surrendered all four Roseburg runs on five hits with two outs as Indians’ ace Zack Mandera tossed a five-hitter.
