PORTLAND — Crater junior Andy Monroe ran the nation’s fifth-fastest high school mile at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays track and field meet Friday, according to officials.

Monroe won the elite event in 4 minutes, 9.45 seconds, improving on his personal best — set in this meet last year — by seven seconds.

Monroe’s time converts to a 3:51.04 time for 1,500 meters, which is more than six seconds faster than both his PR and the best time run in the state this year.

“I’m not surprised at all,” said Crater coach Justin Loftus. “I’m happy he broke through that barrier. Breaking 4:10 was a huge step moving forward.”

Complete results were not available at press time.
