ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University men and women stand in second place after the first of two days at the 23rd annual Cascade Collegiate Conference Track and Field Championships Friday at Raider Stadium.
The meet concludes today beginning at 10 a.m. at Raider Stadium.
College of Idaho leads in the team standings for both the men and women after 11 events.
The defending conference champion Raider men trail College of Idaho, 99.5 to 88.
The College of Idaho women, who have claimed four straight titles, piled up a commanding 146 points. Southern Oregon has 72.
The Raider men picked up victories in two individual events and won the 4x100 relay.
The Southern Oregon men captured the top two places in the long jump and 400 meters.
Raider sophomore Zach Beltz won the long jump with a mark of 24 feet, 2¼ inches, while teammate Dwight Shaw finished second (22-9¾ ).
In the 400, Raider senior Matt East edged teammate Cedric Quartey for the victory. East posted a time of 49.64 seconds and Quartey was clocked at 49.87.
The Raider men placed first in the 4x100 relay (41.33) with the team of Shaw, East, Jeremiah Emershy and Cameron Bremmer.
Southern Oregon picked up second places by former North Medford standout Ray Schireman in the 10,000 (32:14.34), Kevin Poteracke in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:24.38) and Joe Dotson in the decathlon (6,695 points).
Former Rogue River High athlete Seth Gretz, competing for Oregon Tech, won the decathlon with a total of 6,760 points. Gretz also finished second in the 110 hurdles.
The SOU women registered victories by Arianna Daniel in the 400 (58.26), junior Jessa Perkinson in the 1,500 (4:39.14) and sophomore Lauren McGowne in the long jump (18-2½).
Raider sophomore Braana Weber placed second in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:31.60) and sophomore Kayle Blackmore finished second in the 1,500 (4:40.85).
The Raiders won the 4x100 relay in a time of 47.07 with Rakayla Tyler, Daniel, Margot Hamman and Savannah Greenwade running legs.
