SAN FRANCISCO — Oregon State redshirt senior left-handed pitcher Max Engelbrekt has been named the Pac-12’s 2017 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Monday.
Engelbrekt is the first Oregon State player to earn the honor since the award’s inception in 2008.
A native of Seattle, Engelbrekt is pursuing his Master of Business Administration and carries a 3.63 grade point average through the winter term. He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance with a GPA of 3.41 last summer, and was recently named a 2017 Pac-12 all-academic first-team selection after earning second-team status in 2016. Engelbrekt was also a CoSIDA Academic all-district 8 first-team honoree in May.
Engelbrekt has played in 80 career games for Oregon State, including 16 this season. The left-hander has a career record of 11-5 — 3-0 this year — with 1.97 ERA. He’s tied for third all-time at OSU with 22 career saves.
The Beavers (54-4) will open the College World Series against Cal State Fullerton (39-22) this weekend.
In order to be eligible for the scholar-athlete of the year award, individuals must be a senior (in athletics eligibility), on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport’s regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.
Mulholland honored again
Oregon State left-handed reliever Jake Mulholland was named a Freshman All-America first-team selection on Monday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Mulholland, from Snohomish, Washington, leads Oregon State with six saves and 27 appearances. He is 6-1 with a 1.31 ERA in 48 innings and opponents are batting .195 against him.
In 48 innings this year, Mulholland has 41 strikeouts to just 11 walks.
Mulholland has also been recognized by Collegiate Baseball as a Freshman All-American, and was also honored as a Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection.
