GRANTS PASS — Jacob Melton homered and Ethan Whitney pitched a three-hitter as the Medford Mustangs opened American Legion AAA Area 4 baseball play with a doubleheader sweep of the Grants Pass Nuggets Tuesday.
Medford won the first game, 6-4, as Melton ripped a solo shot in the fifth inning for his second home run of the season.
The Mustangs (7-1 overall) got strong pitching from Whitney in the nightcap for an 8-1 victory.
In the opener, James Turnbull was 2-for-2 for Medford, Melton was 2-for-4 and Dylan Marsh had a hit and two RBIs.
Nick Sanderson (2-0) allowed six hits over six innings to get the pitching win. He struck out seven and walked two.
In Game 2, Whitney fanned two, walked three and hit a batter.
Cole Carder was 3-for-4 for the Mustangs, and Melton and Joe Johnson each had two hits.
American Legion A
SOUTH MEDFORD 12, NORTH MEDFORD 5: Robby Carle went 3-for-5 and scored three runs as the South Medford Colts defeated the North Medford Mavericks in Area 4 action at South Medford.
South Medford, making its season debut, broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning. Neither team scored thereafter.
Rickey Boortz and Bennett Thompson each contributed RBI singles in the fourth for the Colts.
For North Medford, Jonathan Gassman belted two triples, had two RBIs and scored twice. Quinton Rumrey was 2-for-3 and Ryan Sandoval was 2-for-4.

CRUSADERS SHINE: St. Mary’s senior standouts Joe Johnson, Travis Danielson and Ben Robinson each had strong outings for the East squad last weekend in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A All-Star Baseball Series at Linfield College in McMinnville.
Johnson was nominated for overall series MVP honors after going 6-for-9 in three games with one home run, two triples and seven RBIs. Danielson went 5-for-10 with one home run, two doubles and five RBIs, while Robinson was 1-for-5 with a double.
Outgoing St. Mary’s head coach Sean Gallagher was one of the coaches for the East squad.
6A/5A ALL-STARS: The annual Oregon All-Star Series, a three-game North vs. South matchup of Class 6A and 5A seniors will be June 24-25 at Oregon State and three local players will take part.
North Medford catcher Justin Geyer, Ashland first baseman Nick Sanderson and Crater left fielder Jace Godley were selected to the South team, which will be coached by Jay Campbell of Crater and Kenny Niles of Churchill.
Game 1 will be at 2:30 p.m. on June 24, followed by a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
