GRANTS PASS — The leading jockey and trainer from a year ago at Grants Pass Downs picked where they left off as the nine-day meet opened Saturday at the Josephine County Fairgrounds.

Rider Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa and trainer Hector Magallanes teamed up to win the first and fifth races.

Jake Samuels was the leading jockey with victories in the second, sixth and seventh races. One other jockey had two wins: Kassie Guglielmino, Samuels’ wife, won the fourth and eighth.

Samuels won wire-to-wire aboard Xerxes in the featured thoroughbred race in the seventh, the Daily Courier Inaugural Stakes. He won by 1½ lengths, earning $1,925 of the $3,500 purse.

Guglielmino won the marquee quarter horse race, the Rogue Dash, aboard Sneakin Tr. She won by a neck to claim $1,843 of the $3,350 purse.

Trainer Theresa Skinner had two wins, the sixth and the eighth.

In the last of eight races, Katsthoughts triumphed on opening day for the second straight year.

On Sunday, Father’s Day, dads get in free. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. and post time for the first race is 1 p.m.

The featured races are quarter horse trials for the Firecracker Futurity in the second, third and fourth races.

Auto Racing

SOUTHERN OREGON SPEEDWAY: At White City, Bailey Hibbard won the 25-lap winged sprint car main event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway.

The 16-year-old Hibbard also won his eight-lap heat race and the four-lap scramble, but previous feature winner Kyler Barraza set the early main event pace. A lap 3 yellow flag flew for Bailey's grandfather Calvin Hibbard. Bailey gained the lead from Barraza on the restart and the the rest of the way for the victory. Bailey's father David Hibbard took second late in the race and Barraza settled for third ahead of Patrick Dills and Merissa Henson.

Derek Nance of Merced, California, won the 25-lap IMCA Modified main event and Dustin Knight thrilled the crowd with a last-lap pass to take the 20-lap late model main.

Mike Medel scored wins in both the four-lap trophy dash and 20-lap IMCA Sport Modified main, Gary Anderson broke free from his early season slump with a 20-lap mini stock main event victory and Mark Minter claimed his second straight 20-lap OTRO Hardtop main.
