GRANTS PASS — It was a big day for trainer Hector Magallanes in the Firecracker Futurity trials on Sunday at Grants Pass Downs.

Magallanes not only had the fastest horse, but he watched his horses claim four of the top five spots and capture six of the eight lanes for the main event on July 4.

Rider Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa won two races for Magallanes, claiming the trial’s fastest time in the second race with I Deliver as well as the fourth-fastest time in the third race with Corona B Gone.

Another of Magallanes’ horses, L Bar D Classic Trip, won the first of the trial’s three, five-furlong races with jockey Jose Figueroa. Pendleton Promenade, L Bar D Razle Dazle and This Wagons On Fire will also represent Magallanes in the event. Warhock, second fastest in Sunday’s trials, and Sweet Dream Demon will also compete for the Firecracker Futurity’s $30,000 purse.

After two victories Saturday and a sweep of the three trials races, Magallanes upped his win total to five while Jake Samuels tallied his fourth and fifth wins of the season by capturing the last two races of the day. He won the seventh race atop Gabe’s Pride and the eighth with My Son John.

Ridden by Kassie Guglielmino, It Doesn’t Add Up captured its 20th career win and third at Grants Pass Downs.

Monetarily, Sunday was a historic day for the track in the Southern Oregon Racing Association’s era since 2013. The official handle was $72,807 with $59,740 coming from on-track bets and $13,067 coming off the track. The total topped last season’s Father’s Day record of $62,649.
