RENO, Nev. — Joe Johnson came up clutch on a pair of occasions for the Medford Mustangs to keep them in position Friday for a potential berth in the championship game at the Josh Anderson Memorial Tournament at Peccole Park.
Johnson, a recent St. Mary’s High graduate, had a go-ahead two-run home run in the third inning and supplied a walk-off two-run hit in the seventh inning to lift the Mustangs to an 8-7 comeback win over the Santa Clara Red Sox in American Legion AAA baseball action.
Johnson finished 2-for-4 for the Mustangs (13-4), who wrap up pool play in the tournament at 2 p.m. today against the Danville Hoots. Medford is 3-1 thus far in the tourney.
Ryan Lorenz was 2-for-4 with three runs and Jacob Melton 3-for-3 with one RBI for the Mustangs.
Santa Clara led 7-4 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning when Lorenz reached on an error and Melton walked. Kellar Edwards then reached on an error that allowed Lorenz to score, and Berry Hunt followed with an RBI double. Johnson then singled down the right field line to cap the comeback.

CHICO HEAT 5, MEDFORD ROGUES 3: At Chico, Calif., Medford had its four-game winning streak snapped after leaving 10 runners on base in Game 2 of the Great West League road series.
League-leading Medford (16-7) opened a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning thanks to RBI singles by Jake Hellweg, Josh Berman and Braden Stutzman after Alex Isola’s one-out double.
Chico (14-9) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie, then scratched single runs together in the sixth and seventh innings to pull away from the Rogues.

NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 15, MARIST 8, 5 inn.: At Eugene, Trevor Corallo had a three-run single in a decisive fifth inning that saw North Medford score seven times to win on a time limit and remain unbeaten in the Best of the West Tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium.
Ryan Sandoval was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, Quinton Rumrey 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Brandon King 3-for-3 with one run for the Mavericks (9-3), who moved to 3-0 in tournament play.
North Medford will next face Chico at 9 p.m. today to wrap up pool play, then go into the placing round on Sunday.
