A medalist was decided.
Another round of championship matches brought with it few upsets.
And a boy selling lemonade and nuts on the golf course planned to pay it forward.
The second day of match play at the 88th Southern Oregon Golf Championships didn’t produce a plethora of upsets, but there were nuggets of interest at a number of turns at Rogue Valley Country Club.
The young entrepreneur, who has been stationed at a house on the fourth hole on the outside course on recent days, told one player he had done well and pledged to send a portion of his earnings to flood victims in Texas.
As temperatures climbed into triple digits, players no doubt enjoyed the refreshments.
And as it heated up, the two low qualifiers with scores of 71 in the men’s regular division, Chris Polski and Michael Borton, moved their three-hole playoff up a couple hours.
Borton, from Atlanta, won the battle, making a birdie on the par-5 first hole on the outside course and winning the stroke-play test, 12 to 13.
He didn’t win the war, however, losing earlier in his match to Joey Walker, 1 down.
Polski was more fortunate in his match than in the playoff. Among the division favorites after having captured the 2015 title, the former pro from Eugene defeated Cody Stoffel, 3 and 2.
Polski has been playing well of late, particularly with his putter.
“I’m rolling the ball really well,” he said, “hitting my lines. I’ve had a lot of putts just not go in, but I’m hitting my line pretty much every time. If I shore up and get a little more consistent driving the ball, I’ll be doing pretty good.
“But, I’m not putting myself in any bad spots. I’m keeping the ball in front of me and doing what I want to do.”
Polski closed out his match on the 16th hole, a short par 5 that he eagled for the second time this week.
With 177 yards in, he hit 8-iron to 10 feet and made the relatively straight putt.
Also winning in the men’s regular was Jimmy White, 5 and 4 over Ryan Schaefer. Schaefer lost in the finals to Polski two years ago.
In the men’s junior-senior, Bret Breeze and Ryan Hawkins, long among the top players in the tournament, played in the same group for the first time. Both won, setting up an intriguing match Saturday.
Breeze defeated Jeff Barry, 5 and 3, and Hawkins topped Craig Knips by the same tally.
“It’s going to be fun playing with Ryan,” said Breeze, the 2015 junior-senior champion. “He’s just a great guy, super gracious.”
Breeze admitted he hasn’t been playing his best, but in match play, the objective is survival.
“A couple years ago when I won, I kind of scraped it around and then all of a sudden, it clicked and it was perfect,” he said. “It was like I used to play. I hope that can happen; I don’t know if it will.”
He knows Hawkins won’t be a pushover.
“You’ll never get a hole given to you by Ryan, that’s for sure,” said Breeze. “You have to grind it out.”
Also winning in junior-senior was defending champion Steve Taormino, 7 and 6 over Jeff Morgan. Taormino will face David Cuttrell, who went 21 holes to fend off Cameron Mitchell.
Another top-notch duel will play out Saturday in the men’s senior, where Kevin Klabunde and Mark Wilson each advanced. Klabunde, an eight-time champion across divisions, defeated Gary Loeb, 3 and 2. Wilson, the 2012 and ‘13 senior titlist, dispatched Brent Takemoto, 3 and 2.
The two met in the early rounds last year, with Klabunde topping Wilson on the 16th.
Other senior winners included medalist Bob Hyer, 2014 titlist Glen Clark and 2010 junior-senior champion Ken Stringer.
The men’s super-senior division is loaded with former champions in the semifinals Saturday: Greg Miller meets George Mack, and Doug Ward takes on Dan Dixon.
Mack is attempting to add to his record 12 titles. Miller is the defending champion.
In women’s senior, defending champion Sandy Day advanced with a 5-and-4 triumph over Marianne Metzger. Former winner LaVone Kirkwood beat Jan Hughes, 1 up, and last year’s runner-up, Alice Hunt, edge Julie Schamanek, 2 and 1.
Matches continue through the championship round Monday.
