PHOENIX — Phoenix coach Stephanie Vandenbusch appropriately characterized the Pirate girls soccer victory Monday.

“It was a very big win for us,” she said.

Indeed.

The Pirates ended a drought of 75 league games without a victory when they defeated Klamath Union, 2-1, in Skyline Conference action at Colver Field.

Phoenix’s last league win had been on Oct. 27, 2009, when it downed Illinois Valley, 9-0, in its next-to-last match.

The Pirates dropped their season finale that year, then went 0-10 for six seasons before recording two ties and eight losses last year.

Phoenix was 0-4 in league and 2-5 overall entering Monday’s game against the Pelicans (1-4-1, 1-3-1).

“It was a total team win,” said Vandenbusch.

Lupita Alegria put the Pirates on the board first with a penalty kick in the 20th minute.

Alex Hernandez made it 2-0 10 minutes later.

Klamath Union got within 2-1 five minutes into the second half, but that was the last of the scoring.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 8, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: At Cave Junction, Brighton Plankenhorn went on a scoring spree in the second half, posting a hat trick over a four-minute span to power Cascade Christian in the District 5 match.

The Challengers (5-2-1, 3-1 Dist. 5) were up 2-0 at halftime, but Plankenhorn scored on a breakaway in the 60th minute, before making header on a direct kick from Emily Stephens in the 63rd minute. She capped her run with another breakaway goal in the 64th.

Saiah Merrihew added two goals for the Challengers.

Grant scored in the fifth and 15th minutes, getting assists from Preston Jernigan and Kaleb Webster-Wharton, respectively. Luka Cvijanovic tallied on a header off a corner cross from Jernigan.
